3 Causes of Pink Eye: Be Aware so You Can Treat this Irritating Eye Problem

Everyone should be aware of the causes of pink eye. Anyone who has ever dealt with the itchy, painful, dry, unpleasant feeling that comes with pink eye symptoms knows the importance of fast relief. Identifying the problem is only the first step, but it is a vital one. The causes of pink eye can tell you how to treat the problem so you get better quickly.

Cause 1: Pollen and Other Allergens

Some people are not aware of the fact that allergy problems can lead to one type of pink eye. This happens when irritants, such as pollen, dust and other debris, enter the body through the air. When this happens, the immune system reacts and in doing so causes a chain reaction that leads to many uncomfortable symptoms. When allergies cause pink eye, the patient must do what they can to avoid whatever started the allergic reaction. This may seem nearly impossible during certain seasons, but some prescription and over the counter allergy medications may be able to help.

Cause 2: Chemical Substance Contact

Anyone that works with chemicals should be aware of what they can do and the safest way to handle them. Chemical substance contact is one of the causes of pink eye.  This may not be because the individual intentionally placed a chemical in there eye. Splashing or accidental contact is usually the case, and could be prevented by using proper eye wear when handling chemicals.

Cause 3: Pink Eye Infections

Viruses and bacteria are the most notorious causes of pink eye. These infect the eye and create a type of pink eye that is very contagious. These infections are most often accompanied with a discharge of the eye as well as the typical redness and itching. The patient should avoid contact with others if possible and treat the eye immediately. A physician may decide that antibiotics are needed, but this is not always the case.
