Conjunctivitis, more commonly referred to as pink eye or madras eye, is a very uncomfortable condition that can develop in the eye. Many people experience the discomfort that comes with pink eye. However, early identification can help the patient alleviate symptoms with the help of a doctor’s visit. Quick diagnosis can also help the patient contain the problem so it does not spread to the second eye or to another person. How can you tell if you have developed a case of pink eye?
Redness of the Eye
The eye takes on a red appearance that grows worse as pink eye develops. This is perhaps the most common of pink eye symptoms, indicating the name of the condition. Redness will appear in almost every instance, from bacterial to viral and allergy induced pink eye. Difficult as it may be, patients should try to avoid rubbing at the eye because this could increase redness and discomfort.
Itching Sensation
Anyone who has ever suffered from pink eye symptoms knows the horrible itching sensation that often accompanies this common eye problem. The itching can become nearly unbearable at times, and rubbing the eye can cause further irritation. Scratching at the eye can also cause serious damage and is not recommended.
Unsightly Discharge of the Eye
Many patients experience a gray or yellow colored discharge of the eye. Pink eye symptoms may vary due to the cause of the problem. In some cases, the patient has a watery discharge while others notice a thicker, sticky discharge. This can make it difficult to open the eyes after they have been closed for long periods of time (such as after sleeping). The discharge can also become dry and form a crust around the eye.
Dryness and Pain
Some pink eye symptoms include a feeling of dryness in the eye or even pain. This can make the situation far worse, especially if the patient continually scratches at the eye. In cases involving chemical exposure, the pain will be noticeable when looking directly up or down.
Managing Pink Eye Symptoms
Although many cases of pink eye will heal after a few days without treatment, it is recommended that the patient seek medical advice. Discharge and itching can lead to the spread of pink eye. A physician can prescribe medication if necessary to heal the condition faster and help prevent it from spreading.
